Temperament
The Lagotto Romagnolo was originally a retriever in the water, its use was similar to that of the known retriever.
Subsequently this attitude was lost, making room for its use in the search for truffles
The great versatility and the affable character make him an easily trainable dog and very suitable for family life, even and especially if there are children. The docility and innate sweetness of this breed will soon make it a full member of the family, attached to you by a very strong bond.
However we must not forget that the Lagotto is a working dog and therefore tends to be very active. He needs exercise and physical activity and it would be good to keep him busy making him work, play or taking him for long walks in the open air.
They are also excellent swimmers who, in principle, show no hesitation in the water.
They have a very waterproof coat that makes them able to work long in very cold waters.
As for the “relationship” with the other animals, Lagotto tends to be a very docile and non-aggressive dog. Let’s say that a small characteristic flaw is not being particularly brave, but this depends a lot on the type of “work” that was done by the breeder. Underestimating fear is one of the most serious mistakes that can be committed, since it could turn into self-defense and aggression.
If you are socialized as a puppy, you will have no problem carrying it around, at the park or at the mall. Everything starts from there: a dog with a good character and well socialized will have no problem in relating to others (his fellow human beings or so) in the course of his life…
Education
One of the first things that comes to mind when thinking about our dog’s education, is how to teach him the most common and common commands that are usually the call, the sitting, not pulling on a leash and doing the needs in the place indicated.
When a new friend is welcomed at home, one often wonders when precisely one must begin to educate him. Many argue that it is preferable to wait for the dog to make 3-4 months because it is too small to learn first.
It is clear that everything depends on the teachings that you want to transmit, but the learning of dogs starts from the first moment they enter the house, clearly leaving the right spaces and moments to get to know each other better, overcome the gap and settle down to his new family. Everything that the puppy will learn in the first 3/4 months will remain indelible in his mind, which at this age is very receptive.
In this phase it is very important to dedicate yourself to stimulation and socialization, which if neglected or managed in an approximate way, will lead the dog to ignore or misinterpret subjects, environments and situations that should normally be familiar to him.
As for us humans, for the dog the game is a gym of life. It is only through these activities that the dog really evaluates his own abilities and possibilities, thus overcoming the various insecurities and slowly discovering self-control. You can devote yourself to the simple launch of the ball, to the agility, imprinting on truffles, to games of mental activation … surely the Lagotto Romagnolo is a very versatile dog, with which you can do almost any activity.
Another very important phase concerns the puppy’s habit to make his own needs out. It is inherent in his instinct to know that he has to dirty away from where he consumes his meals and where he rests, but that does not mean he knows he will have to litter it out.
As for being alone at home there are some rules to follow to make sure that this thing is not experienced as a trauma.
First of all you must gradually get to leave the dog alone, so you will start by making sure that you do not follow us all the time and then you will try to leave it for a few minutes in a room. If you start crying you should not immediately go to reassure it, but it would be better to wait until it stopped. These exercises should be performed several times by gradually increasing the time when the child is alone and when you come back to him you should not incite him in the feasts that he can do, this in order to pass this thing as a normal event that we do not you must amaze.
Another important rule not to be overlooked is to leave the puppy a pastime during our absence, this will help to keep busy and quiet, so as not to decide to ransack the house. An object useful for this purpose that we recommend is the “Kong”, a hard rubber object, inside it, in which it is possible to insert food. The puppy will take time to try and extract the food, thus distracting himself from destroying his much-loved grandmother’s wicker chair.
It is however always advisable to attend puppy classes, which are nothing more than socialization and basic education sessions, specifically for puppies.
